The 14 districts of Essex have been brought to life on a Living Wall sited at the new Chelmsford office of a charitable housing association, CHP (communities, homes, people).
The 34sq.metre Living Wall contains 14 different plant types to represent each district of the county. It took just over one week to plant and install and uses a unique system to conserve its organic properties.
We designed the feature to help preserve nature at the site, and because CHP wanted to make sure these offices are much more than just another fairly anonymous part of the urban landscape.
Each of the 14 species of plant is native to its area, and this means the wall will encourage local wildlife to flourish. This is increasingly important in Essex, where like many places across the UK, firms and householders often opt to pave over soil and grass because its easier for them to maintain. This is endangering wildlife, so CHP is really helping by installing the Living Map.
Each of the planted areas on the living map has a black marker to show the centre of the respective district.
CHP’s new office houses maintenance equipment and facilities for the association.
