Client Background

Floriade is an international exhibition of flowers and gardening, held every ten years in the Netherlands. It has been described as a sort of 'Flower Olympics', or more correctly, a 'unique horticultural expo'. Call it what you like; there's nothing else quite like it! The Floriade Park covers 66 hectares and encompasses five unique themed worlds separated by wooded areas. Lasting six months, this decade's the main focus was how new plant technologies can improve lives.

Using rainwater to irrigate

Working very closely with our Dutch and German agents, Viritopia installed two external and two internal living walls to the information and technology hub in the centre of the park. Rainwater harvesting was used to irrigate the living walls, and bird and bat boxes were installed into the planting for added interest and benefit to local fauna.

The process

Due to the high number of people passing by each day, the living walls were regularly handled. To allow for this, routine maintenance had to be carried out each week, keeping the walls in full health. The four living walls were all grown on our nursery then shipped over to be installed, a process that took three days to complete.

I would like to thank everyone at Viritopia, for making this project such a complete success. The pressure, at times, was extreme but everyone worked very well together to deliver the stunning living walls before the deadline. Thanks again.
