Project Background

Technically outside, this tall living wall is in a light well, involving an interesting plant mix.  We worked with Kier Group on this living wall at 5 Howick Place, property of Cushman & Wakefield.

The different plants we used

Being in a light well this area gets quite a lot of natural light towards the top, but becomes darker and darker as it reaches the ground.  With some areas of the living wall getting plenty of natural sunlight, and others in deep shade, the planting design had to cater to these dramatic changes within the wall – going from sun-loving plant species to shade-loving, within a few metres.

Method for installation

The installation method for this was not typical of how we normally install walls, considering the height, we needed to access this by abseil. Usually with higher walls, we use cherry pickers or other MEWPs (mobile elevated working platforms), however, with not enough ground space, abseil was the next viable option.
